What is forgery?

Considered part of the family of white collar crimes,  forgery involves the creation or altering of written documents with the intent to deceive, defraud or injure another. Forgery is committed against an individual, company or government institution as a way to steal money, goods or services.  Forgery is executed when a written document meant to have some type of legal significance, is changed through handwriting, printing, engraving, or typewriting.

Common examples of forgery

Signing another person’s name to a check
Filling in the blanks of an already signed document
Altering patient records
Identity theft

Penalties for forgery

Forgery can be classified as First, Second or Third Degree. Second and Third Degree forgeries are misdemeanors. First Degree forgery is a felony. Classification is primarily dependent on what type of document was altered, i.e. a deed, will, government document, physician's prescription, money, stamps, etc.

A forgery conviction can result in severe penalties including:
  • Jail time
  • Severe fines
  • Community service
  • Probation
